In other words, we’re on a mission to transform lives. The ability to read expands us, empowers us, and gives us greater opportunity to excel. We know that 95% of children can learn to read with high-quality, research-aligned instruction. The challenge is that our nation’s prevailing approach to teaching reading is not aligned with research on how children need to be taught to read.
At Lit, we’re creating a world where every kid, everywhere, is a reader. To do that, we help translate the “science of reading” (the research about how we learn to read) into the “science of teaching reading.” And we partner with school system leaders to implement those research-backed practices at scale.
If literacy is to be truly liberatory, then students of color and students living in poverty deserve access to reading instruction that’s rooted in research.
That’s why we’re here.
We are . . .
Cosmically urgent. We move with “cosmic urgency” to build a more anti-racist world that recognizes and honors everybody’s somebodyness.
Constantly curious. We are eager to learn in continuous pursuit of a better world.
Focused on excellence over perfection. We center growth, learning and reflection over simply getting things done or letting the perfect be the enemy of great.
Invested in collective success. We believe that to achieve our ambitious mission, we must do so as a team.
And we. . .
Do hard things in a human way. We center the humanity in others while choosing courage over comfort because our work requires us to see and interrupt systemic racism and inequity.
